DSAC Summer Party
Wednesday, July 28, 2010
We thought it would be fun to have a mid-summer get together, so on Tuesday August 3rd at 4:30pm we’ll meet and try out Spirit Mountain’s new Timber Twister and see what Race has been working so hard on all summer. We’ll follow up with a cookout at the Thickens’ house.
The plan is to meet at the Timber Twister at Spirit (instead of turning left at the big sign towards the Team Room/Chalet, keep going straight and follow the signs) at 4:30 pm. Please be on time, because we need to pay for all of the passes at once in order to get the group rate. Latecomers may have to get single ride tickets. Cost for as many rides as you can fit in in two hours will either be $15 or $18 (depends on how many people we get). Please bring cash, as we need to pay as a group.
Afterwards, we will convene at at our house (~7:00pm) for a cookout. 2605 E 7th Street. map
You can join us for just the Timber Twister, just the cookout, or the whole shebang - please just let us know so we can plan food, etc. Parents, Coaches, Athletes, Siblings welcome.
Note that you must be 48” tall to ride the Timber Twister alone - anyone over three years old can ride with some 16 and up.
Please let me know by Monday August 2nd how many will attend, and whether it will be for the whole thing, or just the Timber Twister or the cookout, so we can shop accordingly.
Hope to see you soon,

Spring Clean-a-thon at Spirit
Saturday, May 22, 2010
It is time for our second annual spring clean-a-thon at Spirit Mountain. Last year's event started from a not-so good place, but this year is different. We want to continue the tradition as a way to say Thank You to Spirit for all they do for our program.
In addition to providing free space for the ski-swap (which I'm sure you've all heard me remind you is our biggest fundraiser), our banquets and pot-luck, I was in a position this year to see how much help we get from Spirit Mountain employees on these events and on-hill at our races, all the way from NJRS, USSA, and to the Atmore as well as in the Park for the freestylers. The support we get from the hill is really phenomenal, and much appreciated, and we of the board think it is appropriate for out athletes to get out and do something for Spirit as a token of our thanks.
To wit, we are having three (3) time slots in the coming weeks where athletes can come for 90 minutes. We expect all athletes to attend one of the three sessions.
Session 1: Monday, May 24, 5:00-6:30 pm Session 2: Wednesday, May 26, 4:00-5:30 pm Session 3: Saturday, June 5, 10:00-11:30 am To reiterate, we expect athletes to attend ONE of the THREE sessions.
Tim Heren has graciously volunteered to coordinate this event, though we need a couple more parents to help supervise at each of the sessions. Please get back to Tim at theren16@msn.com if you can supervise one of the sessions.
Thanks and have a safe spring,
David Thickens

Preserving History - It's a Snap
Tuesday, March 9, 2010
There's something really satisfying about watching the slide show at the End of the Year Banquet. You get glimpses back in time, catching a snapshot of kids and parents in different locations in each frame. Now is the perfect time to start capturing those photos - in digital format if possible - and video clips. Take advantage of the beautiful spring weather and get some of those pictures locked away for the banquet. David Thickens, master of the slide show, is handing off the baton for collecting and assembling all the photos. As soon as a successor is determined, we'll provide a link for sending photos and clips.

Fun Race and Race Ski Demo 3/14
Monday, March 8, 2010
Fun Race Spring is here, and it is time for our club fun race. The race format will be two runs of Slalom followed by two runs of GS. The best SL run will be added to the best GS run to determine total time. Inspection for the SL runs will begin at 9:30am, and we should wrap up with awards about noon. This is going to be a casual, low pressure race, and should be a lot of fun. We will be grilling burgers and hotdogs (provided), and hope that folks will bring sides and drinks to share - sort of a quasi pot-luck.
It would be helpful to get a sense of numbers, so please sign up on the sheet in the team room. Race Ski Demo Ski Hut has arranged for several ski companies (Volkl, Blizzard, Head and maybe Fischer) to bring demo race skis on Sunday for our athletes to try out. They can try them during the morning, or we will also re-set a SL course after the fun race and continue to provide timing. The focus will be primarily on Slalom skis, but there should be some GS skis as well. This is a great opportunity for athletes to find the skis that work best for them. The demo will start at 9:00 and wrap up early afternoon. Remember, the time change! Saturday night (technically early Sunday morning) is when we "spring forward", so make sure you set your clocks ahead or you will show up to the fun race an hour late. :(

Rally for the Wieczorek Family
David Thickens
Thursday, February 25, 2010
As some of you may have seen on the recent news, the Wieczorek family, who have several members affiliated with our club - Isiah on the Freestyle team, Tom on our Board, and Kayla who graduated last year - had a fire at their home on February 24. Everybody got out safely, but there was significant damage and they will be out of the house for some time.
For the time being, they are set up in a hotel in Canal Park while they figure out what the restoration process will entail. As you can imagine, even the stuff in the house that was not directly affected by fire and water still has significant smoke damage. (Corey was on the first engine to arrive at the house).
For those that want to help, Karen Tusa has volunteered to be the clearing point. She will collect donations of cash or checks, and use them to buy gift certificates to area restaurants. Her address is 3780 Alder Ave, Hermantown, MN 55810.
Thanks,
David

High School Sectional Results
David Thickens
Thursday, February 11, 2010
Team Duluth had a great showing at the Section 7 meet today at Giant's Ridge, with 11 current and two former team members qualifying.
Top honors on the girls side went to Megan Danelski, who won by nearly 3 seconds. On the team side, the Marshall Ladies -- including Elke Wood (who finished 2nd individually) and Charlotte Skinner (7th), and former Team Duluth Athlete Dominique Caya (10th) -- took second behind a strong Cook County team. Marshall just edged the Hermantown team tying them in points and having to use the fifth place finisher as tie-breaker (that's why you always hike, and hike fast). In addition to Megan, Olivia Tusa (5th), Madison Danelski (7th), Mary Kate Wheeler (12th) and Lilly Whitney-Eliason (15th) all qualified as individuals. In total, our ladies took 3 of the top 5, 5 of the top 10 and 7 of the top 15 spots.
Team Duluth was also well represented on the Boys side, where Henry Roningen got the bullet and let the East team to a second place team finish. On the East Team with Hank are Sam Seelos, who finished 8th, and Nick Lane (29th). Qualifying as individuals were Alex DeRocher (15th) and former team-member John Green (14th).
In Section 5, team-member Savannah Stone took 7th and also qualified as an individual.
Congratulations to all the qualifiers from Team Duluth and good luck next week at State!

Thanks for the Atmore Help
Tom Wood
Wednesday, February 3, 2010
On behalf of the Atmore Memorial organizing committee I would like to thank all of you for making the 32nd Annual Atmore Memorial an overwhelming success!
Once again Team Duluth demonstrated how to put on a first class race. There are so many facets to planning and staging this race that make the Atmore Memorial the premier event in the USSA Central Division. Here are a few:
We have to have a ski area that is working in concert with us, and motivated to make our event successful. We have Spirit Mountain with Renee Appel-Mattson and Denny Monson giving us support and facilitating our efforts.
Securing hotel rooms for Administrators, TD and Pace Team, we start this process in the spring/summer when the FIS schedule is announced.
Planning hill set-up for the race, b-net, starts, finish and start wiring, launch pads, grooming plans.
Renting PA, Porta Potties and scheduling a room for the race office.
Volunteers start in the fall and as the race approaches soliciting donations of food, water, lodging.
We have to compile a list of volunteers willing to work the actual race and assign them to a host of positions.
A schedule of events needs to be posted and communicated to the Central Division of USSA and beyond. A brochure of the schedule needs to be created, printed and distributed.
As the race approaches we plan meals to feed the workers and coaches. These meals are made the evening before the race and delivered to Spirit and then further, distributed on the race venue.
Banners need to be hung, the chalet and race office need to be set-up and the check-in area needs to be prepared for the competitors and volunteers.
When the competitors get to town they register for the race in the Bear Paw Chalet. A group of volunteers organizes this process and ensures that all competitors are registered properly and have purchased a ticket.
The Atmore Memorial is famous for it's cocktail party held in conjunction with the Team Captains Meeting which takes place before Sunday's race. Volunteers coordinate this effort and current members and alumni bring an hors d'oeuvre to complete a phenominal festive atmosphere.
As you can see it takes a huge effort by many people to make this race what it is. It's huge, it's the best, and it's the best because of the volunteers from Team Duluth!
Being part of the Atmore is rewarding and a lot of fun combined with a bit of stress. It's a great feeling to be a part of this enormously successful event.
Lastly, or firstly, but probably somwhere in the middle, are a host of community businesses who donate their products and services. I will ask, again, one of our volunteers to provide a list of sponsors to be posted in the Team Room.
Thank you all for being a part of the 32nd Atmore Memorial FIS Slalom!
Tom Wood Chief of Race 2010 Atmore Memorial
Special thanks to "some" who chaired committees: I'm sure I will miss some names. Please accept my apologies in advance.

Congratulations Race
GSR Productions
Wednesday, February 3, 2010
In a string of victories rivaling Lance Armstrong’s, Scott ‘Race’ Ransom once again takes the honor of Most Handsome Ski Coach for the 2005/06 season. For the sixth season in a row, Race blew past the other competitors from the word ‘go.’ Possible contenders for the award fizzled early in the season, falling victim to ‘six-pack flab,’ ‘Super Bowl-belly’, and other waistline ailments. Race credits his trim physique to eating on the run, never using the chairlift, and being in three places at once.

Volunteer for Atmore Help
Wednesday, January 13, 2010
DSAC has another very important race weekend coming up, and we need your help!! As the host site, it's important to provide a strong force of parent volunteers to make the show run. As a member of Region 1, we are fortunate to use quality equipment like gates, timers, fencing, etc. Many parents of racers throughout the region also help, but without hometown help, we run the risk of losing future events. Holding a race involves filling certain key positions that we, as the home site, should be providing. It's a little like inviting someone else to make Christmas dinner for your family. Dinner still gets made, but you lose a bit of pride in the process. Positions like Chief of Race, Chief of Course, Head Gate Judge, etc are all part and parcel to putting on a race. It's understandable that people new to ski racing feel somewhat apprehensive about stepping forward to fill race positions, but there's always something for everyone to do, regardless of experience. Hand timers, announcers, gate judges, scorekeepers, and many other positions require no licensing and little or no previous experience. Chief of Race, Chief of Course, Start Referee, Finish Referee, Referee, and other licensed positions require attending an applicable USSA clinic and passing a written test. Although many of these positions are filled for the upcoming races, there's always the availability to shadow a person. That gives you an opportunity to help with the race and to see whether it's a position you'd like to get more involved with, without having to hold a current license. Tom Wood, one of most experienced Chiefs of Race, is in his final year as Chair of the Atmore. Like most parents, his tenure with volunteering for races will slow or cease when his daughter graduates. His shoes and ski boots will be in need of filling, much like those shoes and boots of past Chiefs like Tom Duffus, John Baumgarth, Dave Jennings, Harry Bischoff, Tom Brown, Stew Hazel, Bill Burns, and all those who have paved the way for us and the Duluth Superior Alpine Club. Thanks to everyone who has stepped forward to volunteer for the races, and if you're wondering how to do it, here you go: If you would like to help with the Atmore, which is a DSAC fundraiser, please contact Darlene Seelos at dkseelos@gmail.com, Karen Tusa at tusadk@mchsi.com or Tom Wood at woodskier@msn.com. Thank you to everyone who is able to help.

Topolino Time Trials
Friday, November 20, 2009
Congratulations to Megan Danelski and Savannah Stone for being invited to the Topolino Time Trials. The trials will be held in Vail in December. The time trials are for J3 athletes, and will involve SL and GS runs. It's a high-level training opportunity for the athletes, and will determine the Rocky/Central athletes who are nominated for the Topolino project. The competing athletes will take 3 runs each in the SL and GS format. The best time from each discipline will be taken into account for calculation purposes. Athletes nominated for the next step - the National Development System Project for Topolino - will be announced at the end of the event. Topolino and the Whistler Cup are the only two international FIS Kinder (Children's) Competitions. Way to go Megan and Savannah !! We're all very proud of you and we will be cheering you on !
